  • Rugby club raise money for Evans

SUPPORTERS of former city rugby player Glyn Evans, who was paralysed in a freak accident during a match, have raised £1,500 for the 50-year-old.

The cash was raised by Evans' former club, Plymstock Albion Oaks, during a visit by a touring side to Horsham playing fields.

Wheelchair-bound Evans was injured while playing on the wing for Old Public Oaks — now Plymouth Albion Oaks — in 1994.

Oaks' director of rugby Mark Watson said: "We'd like to thank everybody who came out to support the day, which was such a success."

Before the match, Evans publicly thanked his supporters throughout the city who have raised thousands of pounds for him since his accident.

  • Ivybridge old and new meet

RUGBY: Ivybridge's successful South West One side will be testing themselves against a 'Dream Team of 2000' at the South Hams' club's Cross-in-Hand ground tomorrow (kick-off 10am).

The inter-club match is a precursor to the Ivybridge 7s which gets underway at 11.30am.

The 'Dream Team' are former Bridgers' players from the successful period of a decade ago, who are putting their reputations on the line against the present first XV.

The favourites on parade will include the likes of Matt Rogers, James Owen and Guy Wellington, against head-coach Spenser Owen's squad.

  • Sevens heaven

RUGBY: THE popular annual Plymouth Combination Sevens tournament gets underway in Devonport on Sunday (11.30am for 12noon start).

The event will be hosted at the Rectory and neighbouring Stonehouse Creek, with most of the city's rugby clubs putting out at least one side.

Joint host Devonport Services will start as pre-tournament favourites to lift the trophy, but Plymouth's other sides will be pushing them all the way.

Clubs must register their team or teams by 11.30am on the day and then the draw will be devised once the exact figures are established.

For further information contact combination secretary Mike Yeats on mobile number, 07979770578.

  • Lions stars are on parade for Commandos' big fundraiser

COMMANDOS in Plymouth are up for the cup — and they're urging sports lovers and charity-minded people to get involved.

This weekend will see the main fundraising thrust of the Royal Citadel's 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery.

The 29 Memorial Weekend at Plymouth Albion's ground at Brickfields will feature an enviable programme of sports and entertainment.

All funds raised will go towards the appeal to raise £100,000 to build a stone memorial commemorating the lives of city soldiers lost in recent wars.

Tomorrow a gala four-course dinner will be staged, graced by a host of sporting stars including members of the 1989 British and Irish Lions team, Finlay Calder, Derek White and Mike Teague.

Other sporting heroes are also set to attend.

The main sporting fixture of the weekend is a rugby match at Brickfields on Sunday (1pm).

Army commandos from 29 Cdo will take on a Plymouth Albion development team in charity match.

A 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery Memorial Trophy — donated by a family friend of Lieutenant Aaron Lewis, who died on operations in Afghanistan in December 2008 — will be presented to the winning team.

The Albion side will include youngsters like Ollie Rayner, Alex Jeffery, Owain Lloyd, Joe Hayes, Dan Cheers, Nick Holmes and Chey Bryce.

The Army commando unit has already raised about £62,000 through donations and its own events.

The scheme is set to go to planning committee in the coming months. The aim is to see it completed and built by November.

To make a donation, cheques, payable to 'CBA 29 Cdo Regt RA', should be sent to Major Greene at the Royal Citadel, Plymouth PL1 2PD, or email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

  • Tamar Saracens win thrilling Lockie Cup final against Tavistock II's

TAMAR Saracens won a dramatic Lockie Cup final against Tavistock IIs with a nervy 22-15 victory last night at The Rectory.

Tavistock scored first when Tom Charlesworth went over, but they missed the conversion.

And Sarries took the lead when Nick Knight scored the first of his two tries of the evening.

Tavistock hit back with a try by Darrin Coles, but touch downs by Lee Welsh and Knight gave the Plymouth outfit Saracens what appeared to be an unassailable lead.

The difference between the two sides was the ability to kick the extra points. Where Tavistock failed to make one conversion or penalty kick, Adam Couttes was virtually flawless with his boot on the evening.

Tavistock made it interesting by scoring a late try through replacement Jude Rotten, but they missed the conversion and allowed Saracens off the hook.

Tavistock mounted some desperate attacks as the clock ticked down, but Sarries had enough strength in defence to hold the west Devon side out.

However, Tavistock did enjoy success in the Ellis Trophy with their thirds beating Saracens seconds 9-7 in a dour game.

Adam Bridgewater was the hero for Tavvy scoring three penalties to win the cup match. Tom Chapman scored a late try to give Sarries hope. Paul Westbridge converted but Tavvy held on for win.

Chris Sillitoe receives the Tom Hitchins Trophy from Bill Hitchins on behalf of Darren Revell
The 2010 Argaum Dinner and Dance took place last Friday at Brickfields and was once again a great success. Although numbers were slightly down on usual there was a good cross section of current and former players, members of the junior section, guests from OPMs and the press. Councillor Bill Hitchins and his wife Sue were also honoured guests. Chairman Chris Sillitoe once again presided over affairs and perhaps was more succint with his speech this year, although there was plenty of toasts with the obligatory port on each table. Stuart Quarterman repeated the excellent table decoration and layout from last year and music was supplied by the excellent Sunset who demonstrated their wide repetoire. So to the awards......

Cheque presented to Lisa De Lar of Help For Heroes
Plymouth Argaum Annual invitation Chairman’s Vs Presidents rugby match was played on Saturday 15 May. This year the club decided to use the game to raise money for the club charity, Help for Heroes. A large crowd gathered at Bickleigh down to watch Argaum’s teams who were sporting new kit emblazed with the Help for Heroes logo clash in a hard fought end of season match. For “a laugh” both sides decided that those who scored the tries, must attempt the conversion through a drop goal to add the extra’s, this filled most of the forwards with dread at the prospect of personal embarrassment.  The game was started by a Traditional Kiwi Haki led by New Zealander Mike "Aussie" Schaab, this was going to be his last game for the club as he is moving back to New Zealand soon after 3 years at the club.

The President’s XV, run by Club Captain Paul Symons, took an early lead with tries from Wike Mood and Martin Cooper; however the Chairman’s XV, under the leadership of 62 year Club Chairman Chris Sillitoe stole a cheeky try through Matt Glastonbury just before half time. Paul Symons’s “men in black” were having most of the play and were looking in good shape for the 2nd half while the Chairman’s XV received a serious half time speaking to.

George Still Proud To Wear The Badge
Written by Richard Belli
Tuesday, 11 May 2010

George proudly sports his new badge
We recently received a communication from Annie Thompson whose father George Rhodes played for Plymouth Argaum between 1948-59. Now 80 years old and living in Langport, Somerset, George's original blazer badge was getting rather threadbare so a request was received from Annie to see if we could provide a new one. As the wearing of blazers is not as prevelant these days (hopefully it will make a comeback) we found ourselves without one to hand but thanks to Mark Handley we were able to source a new one, which George can be seen wearing.

A quick search through the archives reveals that in the 1948-49 season George was described as a 'hard running, hard tackling youthful wing' and that in the 1950-51 season he was joint top scorer with 51 points . Remember that it was 3 points for a try in those days so this equates to 17 tries, a more than decent return. He was also mentioned as being vice captain in the 1957-58 and 1958-59 seasons before moving to Scotland in August 1959 to work.

Although now suffering from Alzheimer's, Annie tells us that he still wishes he was playing rugby and likes to mess around with a rugby ball with his grandsons, two of whom are rugby players. It is a pleasure to learn about George's story and contribution to the club and for that George, from everyone at the club, we salute you!

Plymouth Argaum 10 - 31 Bristol Saracens
Written by Paul S
Sunday, 09 May 2010

Plymouth Argaum hosted touring side Bristol Saracens who play in the Gloucester Premier league which is 2 levels above Argaum in a repeat fixture from the Argaum tour to Bristol. This time Saracens were after revenge for the 14 – 5 defeat inflicted on them by Argaum when the sides met 2 weeks ago. The game started with both sides battling to gain control of play and it was 25 mins before Saracens scored, which was followed by 3 quick tries and the half time score was 26 – 0 to Sarries. A cricket score now seemed on the cards. However under the astute leadership of 1st team Captain Jamie Venner, Argaum fought back hard and started to dominate the forward play. Argaum’s scrum half Dan Case stole a try from poor sarries ball control at the scrum. Another try followed from Argaum’s Fijian No 8. Plymouth Argaum were now dominating the scrums and line outs and it looked for a while that another upset may be on the cards. However Saracens captain Andy Salabank rallied his team for the final phase of the game with and some good play in the back line and this brought sarries another try.  The match was followed by a good rugby tour style sing a long in the bar and a good time was had by all. Argaum would like to thank Bristol Saracens for an enjoyable couple of games and they hope to meet each other again in the future. The next Argaum match is a Help for Heroes fund raiser were the Chairman’s XV takes on the Presidents XV which is to be played next Saturday at Bickliegh down. All our welcome to attend.
