  • Rugby club raise money for Evans

SUPPORTERS of former city rugby player Glyn Evans, who was paralysed in a freak accident during a match, have raised £1,500 for the 50-year-old.

The cash was raised by Evans' former club, Plymstock Albion Oaks, during a visit by a touring side to Horsham playing fields.

Wheelchair-bound Evans was injured while playing on the wing for Old Public Oaks — now Plymouth Albion Oaks — in 1994.

Oaks' director of rugby Mark Watson said: "We'd like to thank everybody who came out to support the day, which was such a success."

Before the match, Evans publicly thanked his supporters throughout the city who have raised thousands of pounds for him since his accident.

  • Ivybridge old and new meet

RUGBY: Ivybridge's successful South West One side will be testing themselves against a 'Dream Team of 2000' at the South Hams' club's Cross-in-Hand ground tomorrow (kick-off 10am).

The inter-club match is a precursor to the Ivybridge 7s which gets underway at 11.30am.

The 'Dream Team' are former Bridgers' players from the successful period of a decade ago, who are putting their reputations on the line against the present first XV.

The favourites on parade will include the likes of Matt Rogers, James Owen and Guy Wellington, against head-coach Spenser Owen's squad.

  • Sevens heaven

RUGBY: THE popular annual Plymouth Combination Sevens tournament gets underway in Devonport on Sunday (11.30am for 12noon start).

The event will be hosted at the Rectory and neighbouring Stonehouse Creek, with most of the city's rugby clubs putting out at least one side.

Joint host Devonport Services will start as pre-tournament favourites to lift the trophy, but Plymouth's other sides will be pushing them all the way.

Clubs must register their team or teams by 11.30am on the day and then the draw will be devised once the exact figures are established.

For further information contact combination secretary Mike Yeats on mobile number, 07979770578.

  • Lions stars are on parade for Commandos' big fundraiser

COMMANDOS in Plymouth are up for the cup — and they're urging sports lovers and charity-minded people to get involved.

This weekend will see the main fundraising thrust of the Royal Citadel's 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery.

The 29 Memorial Weekend at Plymouth Albion's ground at Brickfields will feature an enviable programme of sports and entertainment.

All funds raised will go towards the appeal to raise £100,000 to build a stone memorial commemorating the lives of city soldiers lost in recent wars.

Tomorrow a gala four-course dinner will be staged, graced by a host of sporting stars including members of the 1989 British and Irish Lions team, Finlay Calder, Derek White and Mike Teague.

Other sporting heroes are also set to attend.

The main sporting fixture of the weekend is a rugby match at Brickfields on Sunday (1pm).

Army commandos from 29 Cdo will take on a Plymouth Albion development team in charity match.

A 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery Memorial Trophy — donated by a family friend of Lieutenant Aaron Lewis, who died on operations in Afghanistan in December 2008 — will be presented to the winning team.

The Albion side will include youngsters like Ollie Rayner, Alex Jeffery, Owain Lloyd, Joe Hayes, Dan Cheers, Nick Holmes and Chey Bryce.

The Army commando unit has already raised about £62,000 through donations and its own events.

The scheme is set to go to planning committee in the coming months. The aim is to see it completed and built by November.

To make a donation, cheques, payable to 'CBA 29 Cdo Regt RA', should be sent to Major Greene at the Royal Citadel, Plymouth PL1 2PD, or email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

  • Tamar Saracens win thrilling Lockie Cup final against Tavistock II's

TAMAR Saracens won a dramatic Lockie Cup final against Tavistock IIs with a nervy 22-15 victory last night at The Rectory.

Tavistock scored first when Tom Charlesworth went over, but they missed the conversion.

And Sarries took the lead when Nick Knight scored the first of his two tries of the evening.

Tavistock hit back with a try by Darrin Coles, but touch downs by Lee Welsh and Knight gave the Plymouth outfit Saracens what appeared to be an unassailable lead.

The difference between the two sides was the ability to kick the extra points. Where Tavistock failed to make one conversion or penalty kick, Adam Couttes was virtually flawless with his boot on the evening.

Tavistock made it interesting by scoring a late try through replacement Jude Rotten, but they missed the conversion and allowed Saracens off the hook.

Tavistock mounted some desperate attacks as the clock ticked down, but Sarries had enough strength in defence to hold the west Devon side out.

However, Tavistock did enjoy success in the Ellis Trophy with their thirds beating Saracens seconds 9-7 in a dour game.

Adam Bridgewater was the hero for Tavvy scoring three penalties to win the cup match. Tom Chapman scored a late try to give Sarries hope. Paul Westbridge converted but Tavvy held on for win.

Tongan Internationals Keni Fisilau and Sione Tuipolotu were guest of honour at the 7th Annual Junior Section Presentation Evening last Friday. The duo who have recently renewed their contracts at Plymouth Albion handed out Participation and Individual Trophies to players from the Under 15s and Colts Side in what was a highly successful evening returning to the Argaum Clubhouse after a two year stint at Plymouth Albion. It was also an opportunity to thank some of the volunteers who had once again provided their valuable suppport throughout the season. There was an excellent buffet spread, raffle and disco/karaoke which went down a storm. Trophies as always were supplied by Plymouth Trophyman.
