Long serving Argaum player passes away aged 79.

In 1964-65 he scored over 150 points for the club which must have drawn the attention of first-class club Plymouth Albion.

It was with great sadness that the club learned of the passing of Tony 'Rip' Kirby last week. He started playing for Argaum in the mid 1950s and became a well established half back, captaining the club in 1963-64. The following season he scored over 150 points for the club which must have drawn the attention of first-class club Plymouth Albion. He had a brief spell with the Beacon Park club before returning to Bickleigh Down in 1966-67. He continued to play on well into the next decade and also turned out for other sides within the Combination.

'Rip', a former pupil of Shebbear College, was known as an attacking player with a deft kick and an eye for a drop goal. We last saw him at the club at the inaugural PAPPA reunion in 2014. His funeral takes place on Friday this week, details of which are at the bottom of this article. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.

Some pictures of Rip's time at the club can be found here.
