A historical link...

Today, we welcome Wellington RFC to Bickleigh Down.

I don't remember a time when we have played the Somerset club and certainly haven't any records in recent years, but that is not to say they isn't any shared history between the two Clubs, tenuous as it may seem.

Wellington the town gave it's name to Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington...

We know that General Lord Wellesley was Commander in the Battle of Argaum (Argaon) in 1803. Wellesley rallied three battle weary battalions to overcome the Marathas in the 2nd Anglo-Maratha war.

In 1887, Plymouth Argaum RFC was born, taking the name from the town where the battle took place.

So with that in common, a very warm welcome to our visitors and let the battle commence... :-)
