Argaum beat rivals Old Techs in a nailbiting encounter to lift the Lockie Cup for the first time since 1923-24.

Argaum made history in a number of ways last night capturing the Lockie Cup for the first time since King George V came to throne in 1924. It was the first time that they had beaten Old Techs for many years. This was also the first time that the Chiefs had won wearing their orange kit after a couple of unsuccesful outings.

More importantly it capped a hugely succesful season which had gone slightly off the boil since the Devon Two Championship was secured a few weeks ago. After just missing out against Topsham in the Devon Junior Vase Final, Argaum proved that they are more than a match for Devon One opposition in overcoming Old Techs, who finished solidly mid-table in that league.

Old Techs have won this cup on many occasions and their simple but effective game plan is almost perfect for tense cup finals, so Argaum knew they would have to fight all the way. Huge commitment was evident from both sides in the early exchanges but it was Techs who drew first blood when they slotted a penalty early on. Argaum were unfazed though and after gaining field position deep into Old Techs 22, launched an attack which saw Mason Edwards bundle over for the game's only try. Paul Ansell converted but Old Techs clawed their way back into the game with another penalty and after conceding further penalties Mason Edwards was sent to the sin bin. Techs had a chance to go into the lead but missed a penalty before half time to leave the score 7-6 to Argaum.

The second half continued in the same vein with both sides giving their all in front of a large and vociferous crowd. Techs did drew first blood adter the interval with a penalty which was answered soon after by one from Paul Ansell. Nerves were jangling on the pitch as well as in the stands as further penalties were missed for both sides as Argaum held on their one point lead. Techs frustration became evident when they received a yellow card and Paul Ansell showed great coolness to stroke over another penalty kick which proved to be the last score of the game.

The crowd was not to know this of course as Techs pressed the Argaum line hard towards the end but some great defence meant that the Chiefs held out for the historic win, much to the delight of the Argaum faithful in the stands. It brought an end to a pulsating match, truly worthy of a cup final, in which Argaum's more expansive game had brought them a deserved victory. The Chiefs know how hard it will be next season in Devon One but they have proved, as they have on their way to this Final, that they know how to win at this level.
