Tawts Progress in Devon Junior Cup

Contributed by Wayne Liddle

Argaum went to North Tawton with a slightly weakened team, however a team thought to be able to come away with the victory from the current Devon 1 pace-setters.

The first 20 minutes was a tough battle in the middle of the park, with both side scrapping for everything, and some hard hits being made by both teams. These hits caused a number of scrappy exchanges but discipline held fairly firm.

The Argaum pack was proving dominant in the scrum, winning not only their own ball, but often against the head as well.

The first points of the match however, came from the boot for Tawts, soon to be followed by a second penalty.

With the score now sitting at 6-0 Argaum suddenly found another wind and forged their way into the home sides 22, but with the away team closing in on the line the ball was lost and kicked back into the away half. Argaum flanker Burton was then binned for a dangerous tackle, and while of the pitch Tawton scored a break-away try into the corner. This conversion was missed by a narrow margin. Almost to prove a point the Argaum scrum continued to win ball against the head in the scrums, even with a man less.

Argaum were back to a full complement of players just before the break, but the game had become rather scrappy as the pitch started to churn.

The second half started with Argaum storming out of the blocks, to register a try under the sticks by David Hall, within the first few minutes. This was converted by Paul Ansell.

Argaum spent much of the second period in the home teams half, however were unable to make this count, and the Tawts were always dangerous on the break. This came to prove pivotal as the home team with a slick passing move broke again to score a converted try.

Argaum will be disappointed to have lost their first game of the season, but can certainly take a number of positives from this performance.

They move on now to a home fixture with Old Techs on the 6th, where they hope to continue their impressive league form.
