Chiefs lay down a marker with historic win over Hayle at Bickleigh Down

Argaum's appearance in the Cornwall & Devon league this season will see a number of club fixtures appearing for the first time in many years. Hayle haven't featured on the fixture card for over 40 years with the best result for Argaum, a 3-3 draw in the 1970-71 season. This afternoon's result was therefore a first victory for the over the Lions and it could hardly have been more emphatic.

Both teams came into the match on the back of opening weekend victories, at Honiton and Falmouth respectively, and therefore this was a keenly anticipated fixture. With the early morning rain clouds blown away by a stiff breeze, conditions were nigh on perfect at Roborough and were certainly to the home side's liking as they played down the slope. Jake Turfrey narrowly missed an early penalty chance, but with the home scrum gaining control from the outset, a set piece move saw prop Mason Edwards powering his way over for an opening try which Turfery converted. The Argaum line-out, which perhaps due to the breeze didn't function as consistently during the match, did however provide the next opportunity. After gaining good field position close out, skipper Mike Hunt peeled off the back from 5 metres out to stroll in for the second score which was again converted. A short stoppage for a Hayle injury didn't disrupt the Chiefs concentration on the task in hand. On the resumption another rock-solid scrum gave the perfect base for the ball to be moved swiftly through the backs, with full back Turfrey coming into the line at pace for a 3rd home try, and with the extras added a 21-0 lead in under 20 mins.

Hayle are an experienced outfit in this division and it was no surprise that they worked their way back into the game after the early onslaught. After missing an earlier opportunity, fly-half Damien Lynnes knocked over a penalty which turned out to be the vistors only score of the afternoon. The Lions started to get their own backs moving however they came up against a brick wall Argaum back line with Dan James and the Richards brothers inpenetrable. The match entered a slightly scrappy period as Lynnes missed another penalty and tempers flared on occasions however the interval score remained unchanged at 21-3.

Playing down the slope Hayle may have anticipated a continued fightback however Argaum started the second period brightly and may have extended their score but for a couple of penalties conceded at crucial points. Hayle cleared their lines and worked some good field positions but a combination of great defence and the prodigious kicking of Tom Richards cleared any danger. The home scrum remained strong and gave a great platform for the back row trio of Burton , Hunt and Holliday to be a constant threat to the visitors. Argaum's ball retention was on top form and a length of the field move involving many phases resulted in a penalty won 10 metres out. Mike Hunt wasted no time in taking a quick tap and touched down for his second (and Argaum's bonus point), Turfrey adding the extras.

Hunt appeared to have got his hat trick when getting on the end of another move but the try was disallowed. There followed a series of scrums near the Hayle line with the Argaum front five putting on the squeeze. With thoughts perhaps turning to the possibilites of a penalty try, Argaum eventually moved it wide along the back line for right winger Dave Hall to score in the corner, the conversion missing by inches. As Hayle chased the game a number of counter-attacking opportunites presented themeslves and Argaum's strike runners started to enjoy the freedom. After a promising Hayle attack broke down on the resolute home defences a break upfield saw Turfrey on the end of the move to collect his second, his conversion taking the score to 40 points.

It was the turn of Argaum's left wing to become centre stage. A high tackle on Kal Bloomfield resulted in a dispute between the two sides involving a number of players, eventually it was Mason Edwards who had to sit out the remainder of the match with a yellow card for his reaction to the incident. Shortly afterwards, a loose kick by Hayle was run back and some swift hands created the final opportunity of the game for Bloomfield who duly slid over. Turfrey completed a fine performance and haul of 22 points with the final conversion. All in all a very satisfying afternoon for the Chiefs who put together some great rugby at times and look like a very decent side at this level. The journey of discovery continues with the first of many trips to the Duchy next week at Falmouth.
