Opening Day Win For Chiefs

Dave Sansom was left with a selection headache as a number of potential selections were unable to travel at the last minute. Despite that, there were 29 fit players make the coach journey with a number of walking wounded travelling with the squad.

In came newcomer Daniel Shepherd, making his league debut alongside other new recruits Paul Ansell, Luke Kenny, Adam Fitzpatrick and Jamie Burton.

The Chiefs went in at half time ahead, through tries by Tom Richards and Jake Turfrey. The mercurial Richards engineered his own after collecting from a cheeky chip and chase, which saw a favourable bounce for Argaum to take the lead. Turfrey profited from some slick handling through the backs and with his usual deadly finish, the game that started with both teams looking rusty was alive.

Sansom looks on his team as a squad and the subs have just as an important role to play as the starting XV and they played their part again today. Particular note should be made of the efforts of Dan Smith, whose strong running in a largely forward orientated game didn't go unnoticed.

Argaum turned the screw, with Richards slotting 3 penalties throughout the second half, but the icing on the cake was when openside Burton made a break which saw him offload to Kenny for the final try.

A tough start to the season, but the Chiefs will be happy that it is out of the way. Argaum will need to make the repeat journey next month in the first round of the Devon Junior Cup.
