This re-arranged game saw a mass of unavailability for Argaum. But through one person's unavailability, comes another's chance. So far, chances have been taken by numerous players this season. In came Dave Shepherd after impressing last week and a first team debut for Wiktor Kurowski on the bench.
Both teams seemed up for the game. A recent postponement had added to the anticipation after Saracens had previously edged the Chiefs out earlier in the season. Support was good and the weather fair, and to Argaum, this wasn't about revenge, but about showing how much the team has improved over the winter.
Argaum seemed to have their head in the game from the kick off when after only 5 minutes, a good set of moves from the pack saw Adam Fitzpatrick power through and score Argaum's first try of the day, which was not converted. Saracens seemed taken by surprise at the determination of the league leaders when 5 mins later, only 10 minutes into the game, Tom Richards saw the space 20 yards out and sprinted through for the second try, which was converted by Paul Ansell.
Saracens seemed at this point to realise they were going to have to fight to stay in the game, and some might say they took the spirit literally. A high tackle to Nick Hancock from the home team's number 8 left him wondering where he was and the supporters wondering where the referee's cards were. With Hancock off to give the tweetie birds time to stop circling, on came Dan Smith.
Tension was increasing on the field and some excellent tackling from Tom Underwood saw Saracens being stopped in their tracks. Argaum were inches from the line under the posts when again more foul play was missed.
At the 20 minute point, Kevin Sidebottom forced his way through a gap and extend his arm enough to get the ball over the line, and in the process dislocated his shoulder, (that is the dedication of the man). This was again converted by the boot of Ansell.
Some good play from the Argaum forwards forced numerous turnovers in the rucks, but no more points were forthcoming in the first half.
Saracens upped their game in the second period, with a strong opening 10 minutes, but their best effort (from their number 8) saw stoic defence from Jake Turfrey and Tom Underwood, stooping him short of the line. Soon after, Saracens made the score board after a forward found enough space to push through over the line, which was in turn converted.
The injured Sidebottom was replaced by Aaron Anderson-smith who had made the dash back to play and was welcomed in his usual manor by the Argaum faithful. Turfrey dislocated his finger but was pulled back in place and he returned to the field. Even the unstoppable Hancock returned to finish the game out.
Saracens tried, but Argaum on most occasions had the answer, hitting hard on the gain line, not allowing the home team to gather any momentum. Coach Dave Sansom was delighted with both how his team "performed and behaved both on and off the field", but was quick to add that there are still many important games to play and that was just another game, successfully dealt with, in fact the team were dissapointed not to come away with a bonus point.
Argaum continue to do things the Argaum way and now focus turns to Tuesday's training at City College, Kings Road, 7pm start.
