Chiefs Return From The Village With Four Points

Argaum travelled to league favourites, Totnes buoyed by their impressive victory over Topsham the previous week.

Totnes narrowly missed out on promotion to the Cornwall & Devon League last season after going down against Bodmin in the Playoff.

The Chiefs had to reshuffle this week after injuries to Locks Aaron Anderson-Smith and Paul Walters, along with Adam Wood and Tom Underwood. Cover was provided by the returning Dan Smith and Bradley Westell was called up from the Wanderers. Stuart Quarterman was called out of his sick bed to provide experienced cover on the bench.

An early try for Kal Bloomfield, following good work from Mike Hunt saw Argaum hit their stride early on. The Villagers kept in touch through the boot of their centre, whilst in turn, Argaum's Paul Ansell was having a sound day.

Totnes started to look like they were finding their rhythm midway through the first half, but the constant pressure put on them saw Argaum force the hosts into a very poor ten minutes before the break. Despite having a man in the bin on two occasions, Argaum put points on the board each time.

One of these scores came courtesy of Captain, Tom Richards who scored a fine individual try on the stroke of half-time.

The second half remained tight. Totnes scored early on to narrow the score. With 20 minutes still to go, Nick Hancock and Quarterman entered the fray. Quarterman was immediately high-armed, which enabled Ansell to put another three points on the board.

Totnes tried to break the Chiefs' spirit and disrupt their disciplined approach as much on numerous occasions. Their own disciple seemed to have gone. In particular, their scrum half was binned for a swinging arm and a sinister off the ball incident evaded the referee's attention.

This gave the young Chiefs more reason to close the game out and they forced the game into Totnes' 22. At the last play, and with Argaum leading by seven points, scrum-half Ellery Jones unexpectedly slotted a drop-goal to seal victory and steal away the losing bonus point.

The next league game will be another tough test, in two weeks when Wessex come to Bickleigh Down.
