Chiefs defeat Wessex to stay top.

The Chiefs win their 4th game on the trot and their 3rd league game against an organised Wessex.

The Exeter based team arrived in good form having had a bag full of good wins against Totnes, St Columba and Old Techs recently.

The weather on Bickleigh Down was changeable, but despite this, a good following had assembled.

Argaum could've gone ahead early after a fine break saw winger Kal Bloomfield set free, only to be called back for a forward pass. Soon after, Tom Richards nearly went over, save for an heroic last gasp tackle from the visiting fullback.

Wessex scrummage well and kept it tight in the forwards. Better kicking from hand might have complimented their hard work more.

It too until 20 minutes for Paul Ansell to break the deadlock, slotting his first penalty. Wessex came back into the game and a rare foray into the Argaum half forced a fine tackle from Jake Turfrey, ably assisted by Lawyer, James Riley.

Some scrappy ball on Argaum's 22 forced Bloomfield to hack the ball downfield. The resulting chase and some fine footballing skills ended in an Ansell try. The conversion and a quickfire penalty put the Chiefs in the driving seat.

With a man in the bin, just before the break, Turfrey carved through the opposition defence to score under the posts.

Skipper Tom Richards dictated the flow of the game in the second half. Forcing the game in the opposition half. Going uphill, the scoreboard remained stagnant with 2 missed penalties from Ansell.

It took a thunderous, 50 yard break from Mike Hunt towards the end to add the third try. This after an easy penalty from Richards.

Wessex's strong set piece had been disrupted with good lineout work from Paul Walters and a steal against the head from his brother Neal.

Argaum thought they had earned the bonus point only for Mason Edwards to be adjudged to have dropped the ball over the line at the last.

A man of the match performance by Dan Sargent on the flank was a popular choice in the clubhouse after waiting patiently for his chance with the 1st xv.
