Chiefs grind out win against impressive New Cross

A beautiful day and a beautiful pitch to play good running rugby in Kingsteignton.

A confident start from the Chiefs, playing in their Orange change strip saw them gradually probe at the hosts defence, dominating the early stages.

Despite their early endeavours, it was a mix of good fortune and quick thinking saw the New Cross scrumhalf pass to Ellery Jones who in turn spun the ball out to his own team. Tom Richards, receiving danced past his opposite to score under the posts. Richards converted.

Argaum turned the screw soon after when Mason Edwards broke from the back of a maul inside his own half. A deft offload saw Richards break through, and spin it through the hands for Jamie Burton to crash over in the corner.

New Cross spent the second quarter organising and gradually dragged themselves back into the game. A confident approach and a couple of good kicks saw them swing the momentum.

The teams traded penalty kicks prior to the break.

A considered huddle from both sides resulted in some patient rugby at the start of the second period. New Cross took control and most of the third quarter was played in the Argaum 22. Resolute defence from the Chiefs kept the score static.

Argaum looked to take some momentum from a good spell of defensive kicking courtesy of the half backs. But after some good scrummaging, a great kick and chase from the home team resulted in try saving tackle from Ben Wadham.

Edwards was binned and the resulting set piece saw New Cross come to withing two points.

Ten minutes from time and with a man in the bin still, a great penalty kick from substitute Paul Ansell got field position. A knock on in the lineout resulted in possession regained and the New Cross defence conceded a penalty in front of the sticks. Jones, alert as ever raced in for the score.

With the clock ticking the hosts were invigorated and playing with an inspired tempo pressed again.

Repeated attempts to spin wide proved fruitless. The Chiefs defended ferociously, forcing New Cross to try and kick through without success.

Argaum will be pleased with another win on the road and will have a lot to learn for the coming weeks.
