Forwards at 9, 10, 13, 14, 15. Not the most mobile attacking line.

Back in September, Argaum travelled to Torrington and had to borrow players to get the game on. This time it was our turn to return the favour. With both team bolstered to 15 we kicked off a reduced time, early start, game so that the players could get over to the other pitch and cheer on their respective 1st teams for the 2nd half.
Once again the back line incorporated 5 forwards along with 2 recognised backs. And this defensive line was broken by the Torrington backs, giving them the first points of the day, 0-5.
It wasn’t long before parity was returned with Rhys Jobbins powering over the line for his first ever Argaum try 5-5. Using the advantage of the slope it wasn’t long before Dan Heywood, returning after a short break from the beautiful game, broke through the visitors tackles and drove to the line, leaving an easy 2 points for Sam Russell, 12-5.
With so many players out of position, it was no surprise that with the slope on their side in the 2nd half, the Torrington players went over for 3 unanswered tries (1 con) taking them to a 12-17 lead.
Argaum over the last few weeks have shown that they don’t take these things lying down, and Ben Wheatley, on his Argaum debut, lofted a beautiful kick for an uphill chip and chase. He collected the ball and looked certain to score but was felled just metres from the line, luckily support was on hand from Steve Brown and he was more than happy to score his 1st ever senior try, and add a further 5 points to the scoreboard, tying the game at 17-17. Unfortunately due to a knee in the back (no malice and fully accidental) Ben wasn’t able to play on for much longer, and soon left the field of play.
With the game continuing as it had been since the first whistle, both teams had chances to steal this one at the last, but I was Argaums Sam Russell who eventually sprinted into the oppositions 22 and over the whitewash to score the final points of the day, resulting in a 22-17 win for the Plymouth Argaum Wanderers.
Man of the match was Rhys Jobbins following yet another great display of rugby.
D of the day went to Paul Symons, some would say for just being Symo, but possibly for believing that a 2nd row can also play 15, and the fact that he needs to learn that it’s always easier to catch a rugby ball BEFORE it bounces.
A great result from a very determined team, imagine what we could do if we ever took to the park with a set of backs.
