Second XV held off the challenge from a high quality University side and gain their first victory of the season in a classic game of two halves.

Make no mistake, this was an impressive victory for the Wanderers against an enthusiastic and energetic student side looking to impress their on-looking selectors in a bid to make the Wednesday XVs. They presented arguably stronger opposition than that faced by the Chiefs on the adjacent pitch. The Wanderers were looking to bounce back from last week's narrow defeat at the hands of OPMs and, just like last week, assembled a strong squad augmented with a couple of new recruits from Peninsula Medical School.

On a warm afternoon the early exchanges were very even with both sides running through well worked back moves but met with equally stout defence. What was particularly impressive was the defensive line speed of the Argaum backs and with the Uni under pressure this eventually led to mistakes which the home team could capitalise on. The forwards also deserve praise in laying a decent platform from which to work through phases, lock Ben Thomas was particularly industrious.

Mike Turner opened the scoring with a well worked try which was converted by scrum-half Ben Glanfield. Thereafter Argaum took control of the half with a second try through inside centre Sam Herbert, also converted by Glanfield. Debutante Daniel Evans had a particularly influential game at fly-half and with willing runners to offload to further space was created. A sustained period of attack led to an opportunity for Evans to show some fleet footwork to step his way around the Uni full back and complete Argaum's first half scoring, as this try was unconverted, giving a half time lead of 19 points to nil.

The second team pitch at Bickleigh Down invariably leads to a change in fortunes for the team attacking down the slope and this game was no exception. The Uni's own pacey backs started to get into their stride and despite some good Argaum defence they gradually clawed their way came back into the game with three tries of their own, crucially only one of which was converted, so they trailed Argaum were a man down for 10 minutes during this period when Mike Turner was sin-binned.

With the game in the balance and the momentum with the students, Argaum had to dig deep to pull out the result. The defensive line speed was maintained and gave its reward when pressure on the Uni back-line led to an interception try for Sam Herbert who capped a Man Of The Match performance to run in from 40 metres out. Uni through everything into attack for the frantic last few minutes but Argaum's defence held firm to secure a well-deserved victory.

On a particularly good day for the club with a double home victory, what was pleasing was the strength of the Wanderers squad with everyone contributing. This kept Team Manager Paul Brown busy with rolling substitutions to ensure that everyone got some game time. With replacements once again touching double figures and more players to come back then maybe talk of resurrecting the Drifters (3rd XV) is now becoming nearer to a reality.
