It was with great sadness that the club learned yesterday of the death of Roger Arthur, who ran the club's youth and colts section in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Many of the players went on to play senior rugby for the club whilst Lee McDowell and Nigel Pinder were also appointed club captains. The highlight for many was the trip to play Wasps Colts in London, where the Argaum side gave a very good account of themselves.
The junior section had been reformed in the club's centenary year 1987/88 and the following season an Under 15 side was ran as the club hosted a county tournament for that age group. By 1990-91 a colts side was established with Roger and Ron Boyd at the helm with the side winning The Tamer/Camel Trophy against Wadebridge Colts. The following season saw the side retain the trophy, enter the Devon Colts Cup and then play that famous game at Wasps. Lock Ian Griffiths won recognition for the club by appearing in a Presidents Colts XV. Roger continued for a few more seasons as work commitments allowed to bring more players through the system.
During the first Covid lockdown many memories were shared online and Roger expressed how much he had enjoyed it at the time. 'It has been great reading the various posts from the Colts, my biggest intention as coach, apart from on the field, was to try to create an atmosphere where all felt a part, we had no one on the edges, cliques did not happen and despite all the varied school rivalries, we seemed to achieve that, I also wanted to create memories for you that would last forever and a love for the game, the atmosphere created in the club house by the senior players was always welcoming, they too made sure you all felt a part of the club. Some of you have achieved in your careers, and that too gives me great pride, to use Taff and Jon's comments I think we built those memories, Job Done Good'.
Some of his former colts have posted tributes online:
R.I.P to the rugby legend Roger Arthur who took a bunch of young misfits and trained, coached and mentored them into a team to be feared at Colt level.
I will always be grateful for your guidance during my formative years and am truly shocked and sadden at your loss. - Ian 'Taff' Griffiths
One of the nicest blokes you would want to meet, always had a tale to tell and was so loyal to his players. Very sad to hear this news but these pictures remind me of the great times I had with this bunch of misfits with Roger at the helm. RIP old friend you will be missed by anyone who knew you. - Mark Hill
RIP Roger Arthur; old props never die, we just take longer and longer to get to the breakdown. - Matthew Pearse
Our sincere condolences to all Roger's friends and family. I'm sure a glass will be raised at this Saturday's Players Supper to someone who made such an invaluable contribution to the club.
