The Chiefs get their Tribute Counties 3 Devon (South West) league programme underway on Saturday with the visit of Plympton Victoria to Bickleigh Down. The fixture was originally scheduled to be played away, but an issue with a burst water main meant that the St Mary's ground was unavailable this weekend (hopefully it gets fixed soon). Saturday's opponents are of course good friends of Argaum and for many years close rivals, usually in the old Devon 2 or 3 divisions.
Over the years there have been a number of players who have played for both clubs; Argaum received a large influx of Victoria players in the mid 90s and Plym Vic have a number of ex Chiefs in their current ranks; George Cosford, Jordan Albiston, JP Browning and 'Sid' Sidebottom as well as Nathan Couzens of the junior section. Argaum legend Howell Phillips' last coaching post was with Plym Vic. St Mary's has also been generously made available to Argaum in recent years when Bickleigh Down was unavailable (Storm Eunice being a notable example).
The Chiefs, going into their first match at Level 9 in a couple of years, have had a couple of good pre-season workouts against level 8 opponents Tavistock (24-40) and Liskeard-Looe (0-19). They have also made a number of new signings, most recently picking up Reece Boase from Tamar Saracens who joins as a player and backs coach. Plym Vic themselves had a decent run out against Exeter Athletic, narrowly defeated 24-12. The two teams last met in a pre-season friendly last season at St Mary's but over the years have had many close fought matches in the league. This Saturday promises to be no different as both sides look to establish patterns of play in the early part of the season.
