A last gasp penalty snatches victory at Bickleigh Down after Argaum go 14-0 up early on.

In this, the eagerly awaited first league game of the season, Argaum, with some notable absentees started brightly. Techs set their stall out early with a late hit from the kick-off, a trend that was to continue. However, Argaum kept the ball lively and after 7 minutes, fly half Tom Richards put a high ball into the away teams 22. The bounce favoured Argaum and 17 year old product of the youth system Kal Bloomfield collected and cut in under the posts. Richards with a simple conversion under the posts. Attacking play ebbed to and fro untill on the quarter hour, approaching the Old Techs 22, new signing Richards put a sublime diagonal grubba through which decimated the defence and the lightening quick Iuean Evans raced through to ground the ball over the line. The more experience Old Techs were clearly rattled by this but in their uniquely aggressive style started to grind their way back into the game using the rolling mall from the line out with good effect. From a line out 5 meters out, this play worked and Techs' pack got the try they had worked hard for. This gave Techs momentum and with their very individual interpretation of rucking and their refusal to acknowledge that opposition heads do not equal grass, it wasn't long until they had bullied their way to a second try. No more scores this half. 14-12 to Argaum at the break. The aggressive style continued after the break and the game started to look and feel like a war. Numerous off the ball incidents had started to creep in unpunished and the amount of boot marks on the Argaum players bodies and faces totted up. After 20 minutes of the second half, Techs crept into the lead with another well worked forwards try. Soon after restarting however, this plucky young Argaum side refused to lay down and be bullied. A kickable penalty was curiously sent to touch, much to the disappointment of Sansom, the Argaum coach. However, a couple of phases later saw quick ball off the back of a ruck to send another debutant, Aaron Anderson-Smith crashing over the line. Richards slotted his third conversion to keep his conversion rate at 100% in addition to his 2 assists. The last 15 minutes saw pressure and possession in the middle of park result in techs going for goal with three missed penalties. Had they lost confidence in their mauling game? The long awaited victory for Argaum wasn't to be though, as on 80 minutes another penalty was conceded and with a change of kicker, perhaps the hardest of them all was taken, for the men in black to steal the win. Despite the disappointment, Argaum take a bonus point and walk away with their heads held high, knowing that they played positive rugby and dealt with all that was thrown at them with dignity.
