League favourites St Columba defeated by stubborn Argaum

October has been a good month for Argaum as they notched up another win in the sunshine. Highly tipped to win the league, St Columba brought a large and experienced pack to Bickleigh Down and with the Chiefs having two players injured in the warm up, some might have doubted that Argaum could topple the Cornishmen. The first half was a tight affair, strictly referreed by Mike Ferguson who was excellent throughout. Possession was tight and ball retention was key as it seemed that from the off, it would be a close, low scoring game. Argaum's Jake Turfrey attempted 2 penalties from long range to no avail. Tom Richards finally broke the deadlock on 25 minutes, when he calmly slotted between the posts. Ferocious defending saw the Columba winger go off with a suspected broken arm and their fly-half pulling a hamstring. The enforced changes gave the Chiefs backs a sniff but the half ended 3-3.

With the back line looking dangerous, the pack started to grow in confidence. The scrummage improved and some big aggressive running from Aaron Anderson-Smith and Dan Smith constantly saw the gain line being beaten. Argaum's smaller pack held their own in the set pieces and the power plays, but were awesome in the loose, ball always retained and recycled constantly. Having said that, Columba had their fair share of possession but looked one dimensional in comparison. The try came when the score was 6-3 and was courtesy of a trademark boisterous break from Anderson-Smith. This you feel was born from the bombardment of short ball in the form of Mason Edwards, Dan Smith and Kevin Anderson. Richards converted as he had with his other kicks. St Columba were never down though and it continued to be a tough and well contested game. Argaum went to 14 as Ciaran Bennett saw yellow for an infringement at the ruck. The rest of his team stayed resolute though and had decided that a clean sheet was the order of the day. It was fair to say that for all the power and skill shown out there, it was Ben Glanfield that was the catalyst for most that was good. He showed good aggression at nine, his decision making was superb and ran the show, dealing heroically with some loose ball.
