The Argaum team seemed up for today's match but the game was tainted by ill-discipline as the Illfracombe players persistently failed to release in the tackle and generally test Argaum's temper.
Within 5 minutes Jared Williams crossed only to be denied by a suburb try saving tackle. Argaum were to wait 12 minutes before they saw the whitewash with a brilliant solo effort from fullback Jake Turfrey. After Illfracombe failed to find touch with a clearance (a rookie error at the down), Turfrey returned fire and beat 4 players to secure the first points. Tom Richards added the extras.
Argaum did not continue in this vein and constant contentious decisions from the ref saw Steve Reeves take a yellow for his objections against a very arguable call just before the half.
The second half started brightly with hard running in the pack, Dan Smith bowling his way over after 5 for yet another try, an unstoppable force this it season it would seem. More tries followed, with the absence of Reeves the ball was spun wide and the Argaum backs proved why this is how the game should be played, neat passing down the line saw each player stand up his man like a deer in the headlights, eventually ending with Evans putting Turfrey in for his second.
Ciaran Bennett should have gone over as Evans broke down the wing only to have his passed adjudged as forward by the referee. Inevitably Kevin Sidebottom found himself running onto the scoresheet, with a weaving run from half way that made the opposition look mediocre in defence. The Argaum defence on the other hand had no such issues without possession, nothing could penetrate the 'Iron Clad Warriors' as they kept a clean sheet. The discipline however will be a concern as Argaum saw a Yellow in the first half and had to substitute number 8 Scott Galloway in the second who was pushed almost to the point of no return by the referees decision making.
The real test will be north Tawton away next week as Argaum still look to try and gain top spot. These 5 points however are a welcome result for everyone at the club who have won all but one league game this season.
