The Home Side Play The Conditions To Edge To Victory

This game was billed as a promotion showdown and after the previous postponement, both teams were eager to get the game played.

Despite recent bad weather, Defiance Field was in good shape and had held up against the cold. There was snow in the air and both teams looked sharp in the build up.

St Columba won the toss and chose to take the game on, playing down the hill first. It wasnt much of a specticle to begin with. Both teams stubborn in defence and reserved in attack. Too much to lose maybe, but as the minutes passed, the ball was spun wider more often.

Debutant Stephan Jones saw yellow on 22 minutes. The victim of repeated offences and aftet some good pressure, the St Columba backs span out wide. Ciaran Bennett's heroic attempt to tackle in the corner was to no avail as the winger finished superbly in the corner.

They were the only points conceded playing a man down and the two teams turned around at 5-0.

After a structured council at half time, Argaum started to find a bit of rhythm and it too 10 minutes of keeping the ball alive for Scott Galloway to score in the corner. Slick hands down the line and a sublime touch from Prop Mason Edwards set up the number 8 in the corner.

Outmatched in the backs, the Cornish side turned the screw in the setpieces and when awarded a kickable penalty on 63 minutes, surprisingly or not, took the scrummage. Number 8 Damian Chambers was deemed by the referee to have grounded over the line for a pushover, much to the dismay of the Chiefs' wing-forwards.

Another ten minutes passed with neither team budging, untill Bennett for Argaum broke strongly at inside centre and popped off for clinical finisher Jared Williams to cut through the remaining St Columba defence like a hot knife through butter.

The last 10 minutes were tense as Argaum continued to push from the restart. Jones was held up over the line and Aaron Anderson-Smith landed just short. With minutes to go, a penalty within range was ran, ball was turned over and St Columba wore doen the clock for a victory that could have gone either way.
