The day started with difficulty for the Wanderers as no less than six players cried off on the morning of the game. It seemed at one point that the game was destined not to get going as there was no referee until Friday night and half of the Argaum pack were running late.
All that aside, the game kicked off (slightly late) and the visitors staked their intent. Despite conceding size and weight, their pack seemed determined to take the more experienced Wanderers' forwards on.
Despite some early pressure, the home team started to work their way up the pitch and Argaum's youth section's record try scorer, Kal Bloomfield, showed his class to burn away his opposite number to open the scoring.
A penalty was taken shortly after, but is wasn't long before the enthusiasm of the 'Squirrels' scrum half engineered a try from an error at the back of Argaum's scrum that brought the scores closer.
Aaron Anderson-Smith, making his return from injury soon got the bit between his teeth, running short ball and it wasn't long before the scoreboard was ticking again when he bulldozed his way over. Again, however, the Medics hit a lackadaisical pack to immediately reply.
Soon after the turnaround, the Sqirrels lost a prop, and with no front-row replacement, the game turned to uncontested scrums, nullifying the Wanderers' biggest threat. This did give Ben Glanfield and Gary Michael the steadied platform to impress. Man-of-the-match Michael ensured the ball and indeed the game flowed, when perhaps a less experienced ten would have been flustered, Michael just did the job.
Stuart Quarterman, playing at 8 spent more time in the backs during the second half to try and stretch the game and draw men for the for the back three to exploit. This came to fruition when Jake Turfrey, a late stand-in found the space to beat the ZSqirrels' full back and touch down.
A hard fought win, against the odds was savoured and the Wanderers will wait to find out who they play in the next round.
